Description of Site:

Glogster is a Web 2.0 resource that can be used in schools across any grade level. There are so many features to Glogster that are extremely helpful to not only students, but teachers, and even administrators. Glogster is also being used in over 200 countries and schools all over the world. Millions of accounts (teachers, students, and administration) have been created for use in multiple aspects of education. The next step is to create one and try it for yourself.

Glogster puts the power of creation in the hands of students and teachers in many different forms. This wonderful Web 2.0 tool allows you to explore and create educational content online authentically. Glogster specializes in the creation of a Glog (their form of a digital blog with many different aspects to it). Glogster gives you the freedom to create a digital canvas of resources using different wallpapers, texts, colors, backgrounds, audio, video, links, clip art, and other images all with ease. The wonderful thing about Glogster is that it gives all of the power to the student to choose resources and create in a way that not only makes sense to them, but their audience as well. Students can mix, edit, move, cut, paste, and add files with ease to make the development of their work much smoother without the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Glogster has some different options that can be selected for use. If you are interested in trying Glogster, I suggest the 7-day free trial that is available on their information page. Here is the breakdown of pricing for the use of this wonderful tool:
  • Elementary Schools: $30/yr for one educator and 30 students to use all of the features included.
  • Secondary Schools: $95/yr for one educator and 125 students to use all of the features included.
  • Faculty Option: $390/yr for 10 educators and 250 students to use all of the features included.
  • District Option: There is special pricing for district licensing that requires consulting the people at Glogster.
The information for these pricing options can be found here: Glogster Pricing Information

Glogster does not have ads on their website, and is very user friendly to browse and view different types of things that may be of interest to parties looking to learn information on the product.

Glogs can be shared and used for collaboration in many ways. For sharing purposes, Glogs can be created, uploaded in emails, embedded on web pages, shared to Facebook, Pinterest, and other social media applications by selecting certain options. Also, Glogs can be saved to laptops, desktops, and even iPads (using the iPad app) for presenting the information created in Glogs. Another wonderful aspect is the ability to collaborate. Students can work on Glogs together, develop their Glogs, edit, share, and re-edit if necessary. Once a Glog is finished, students even have the options to make a copy of their Glog and upload it so that others may use it as a template or even use it for some inspiration to get started on their own Glog.

Glogster does not have specific sections for teachers and students, other than the login ability for students to login and edit their Glogs or search resources. Teachers have a login as well, but basically all of the features are available to both educators and students. I think this a great idea so that teachers can understand exactly what the process of creating a Glog is all about. Teachers can see exactly what their students are creating, and the options they have for their creation.

I strongly believe that Glogster is appropriate for use in school because it allows teachers to approach the learning process in a completely different way. Students can take ownership of their work by creating from scratch, using a template to get started, and researching their own information using the Glogopedia resource to find interesting information. The interface is very user-friendly so students can drag, drop, cut, paste, edit information with ease which speaks very well to each grade level that may be using it. I believe Glogster is intended for use of grades 2-12. After looking in-depth at Glogster, I feel that students even as low of a primary grade as second grade can easily learn the information to create simple Glogs, producing information in a way that makes sense to them. This is a wonderful tool for visual learners when having to present information on a topic. Glogster is also a great way to create a visual study guide for students that have difficulty reading. I think this helps a great deal for the lower level primary grades.

Educational Uses of Site

Honestly, I believe the possibilities are limitless when it comes to educational uses for the Glogster site. I think of PowerPoint and how much of a great tool it can be when presenting information. For Glogster, I think this is a fresh take on presenting information in a collage form. Students can organize the information they are using in a way that is meaningful to them, enriching their learning, and making it easier for them to understand the information they are controlling that goes into their Glogs. What better way for a student to understand the information they are learning about than to be able to organize it themselves, arrange it in a way that makes sense to them, and add their own spark of creativity to their Glogs to make it look fun and interesting. I feel that any student that uses Glogster can benefit greatly from the Glogpedia library. The resources available are very helpful, informative, and user-friendly as well. Images can reinforce concepts whether you are creating a math poster board related to a concept such as 3-digit addition, or something as simple as a collage of images and information related to communities for social studies. I believe the most useful reason for Glogster is for students to present information related to a topic in their own way and how they see it. Other students stand to benefit greatly by seeing different points of view and an authentic approach to a specific topic. New ideas can be generated, built on, and expanded by sharing the wealth of knowledge that can be provided by many different points of view. I love the fact that a Glog can be something as simple as a poster board that provides images, text, links, videos, clip art, and writing that all convey similar information on a topic so students can see a wide array of resources related to the topic.

Review of Site

I absolutely love this Web 2.0 tool. I have done a lot of research on it, especially in other courses during my Wilkes program, and this is by far my favorite. I've tried the free trial, played around with the different tools and options available to create Glogs and even as an adult, a teacher, I had so much fun using the tools to create on here. I don't see how any student wouldn't have fun like I did when working with this tool. It appeals to all different types of students. Whether it is a student that learns better with visuals, a student that is learning a new language, or a student that doesn't have very many computer skills, I feel that any student can learn quickly when using this tool because of how user-friendly it is. The pros greatly outweigh the cons in my opinion and I personally believe that no student, teacher, or administrator could have a bad experience when using the program. From the Glogs, to the Glogpedia, each resource is easy to access, and the tools very easy to use and apply to the work being created. I am all about my students taking ownership of their work, and knowing that they created it, giving them a sense of great accomplishment. Glogster, in my opinion, is a wonderful way to give them this ability.
